Coolpad Cool 1 Review: Value For                                       Money Smartphone

Critic Rating4.0/5

Top Features
*Good looking design
*Long lasting battery
*Great dual camera performance

With the massive influx of new budget smartphones in the market, it has become quite difficult to decide one that's the best. While some manufacturers are already doing great in the budget segment, others are still trying to find their way. And with the recently-launched Cool 1, Coolpad seems to have hit just the right spot.

Priced at Rs 13,999, the Coolpad Cool 1 has a promising spec sheet. However, what truly can be considered its USP is the dual-camera setup that it offers at its price. But does it alone make the Cool 1 a smartphone worth buying? We spent some time with Coolpad's newest offering and here's the rest of our review

DesignLeEco acquired a stake in Coolpad earlier in 2016 and the Cool 1 is the first result of the collaboration between the two Chinese companies. As such, LeEco's design aesthetics are clearly visible in the Cool 1. The smartphone has a 5.5 inch Full HD display with an all metal body. While the body has an overall matte finish, the silver lining on the sides is shiny. The handset feels really good to hold. The volume rocker and power button are placed on the right, while the dual nanoSIM card tray is on the left.

At   bottom, there's a USB Type-C port placed between the two speaker grilles. A 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top. Above the display lies the front camera and the earpiece, while three capacitive navigation keys are below it.Turn over to the back and you'll see the highlight dual-camera setup of the Cool 1, along with an LED flash right next to it. Below that is a glossy fingerprint sensor. PerformanceNo matter how good a device looks, it all comes down to performance at the end. Coolpad Cool 1 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 SoC paired with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. However, the storage is non-expandable.The device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system topped with LeEco's EUI skin. The dual camera setup is comprised of two 13MP modules each. Other feature include PDAF and 4K video recording functionality. There's an 8MP front-facing camera included in the mix as well. The handset comes in Gold and Silver colour options. On the connectivity front, Cool 1 offers 4G, LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and USB Type-C. The phone has a 4,060mAh battery with fast charging support.

The Full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution is quite good but thick black bezels all around it spoil the overall experience quite a bit. Unlike other Android smartphones, this one doesn't have drop down settings. So if you want to quick settings, all you have to do is tap on the left soft key and you'll be shown all the settings. What we liked most about the UI is the slide to unlock feature. The drop down menu only shows notifications for selected apps. Let's talk about the smartphone's camera experience. There has been a lot of discussion over the dual-camera technology, with some even calling it a gimmick. It's true that there are 'Pro' features in the camera app that can help you get effects like depth-of-field, but the same can be done by any beginner user with a single tap, thanks to the dual camera setup.

The 13MP rear dual cameras function pretty well and the blur effect can be managed after taking the pictures, which is another plus. The imaging experience on the Coolpad Cool 1 doesn't disappoint. Pictures taken with the front camera are also good enough and some tweaks make selfies look even better.

The 4,060mAh battery performed admirably well in our testing and lasted a day with full charge. However, the metal body of the phone gets heated up pretty quickly when gaming. Other than that, we didn't experience any major lags or performance issues.Call quality was also fine during our testing, although this is something that depends on the network coverage as well.VerdictExcept for the heating issues, we think that the Cool 1 is one of the best smartphones that Coolpad has ever launched. The design is refreshing and the change is actually welcome considering from there are similar-looking budget phones. The dual-camera setup works great and the battery can easily last a full day. All of these make the Cool 1 a value-for-money device at a price tag of Rs 13,999. As for alternatives, there's Motorola Moto G4 Plus andLenovo K6 Note are great as well.

Useless phone. One month usage and wifi issues cropped up. Wifi Mac address changes on reboot! What is this! And no reply from any of the admin or even authorised service centre doesn't know such an issue exists! Wow! They are just clueless. How do I get a refund or return the phone ?
